Affinity Sutton National Ambassador Programme 2014 - Niomi Gibson, 22

The Affinity Sutton National Ambassador Programme has given Niomi, 22, a platform through which to make positive change in her community and get her voice heard. With Affinity Sutton's support she gained a grant through UnLtd Star People to help her start a pop-up cinema in her local area.

22 year old Niomi Gibson and mum of two became a National Ambassador in 2012 after being referred by a colleague. She was really passionate about improving services in her local community and wanted to have her voice heard on a larger scale.

The National Ambassador programme gave Niomi the platform through which to make change. She became highly involved in improving the way Affinity Sutton communicate with their younger residents and was integral in driving forward the Under 25 section of the website. She spoke at National conferences, was involved in the recruitment of a youth engagement officer and become highly involved with local community events.

The programme encouraged her entrepreneurial side and with the support of Affinity Sutton she decided to apply for the UnLtd Star People business start-up award to start a social enterprise in her local area. She successfully gained a grant of £5,000 and has started a social enterprise running a pop-up cinema in Mottingham.

Niomi said,

Affinity Sutton have been incredibly supportive both throughout the programme and with my new venture.

“They overlooked my business plan, gave me encouragement, wrote references and wrote a fantastic article on their website telling people how well the venture is going. They held meetings with me to give business support and put me on a Business start-up course with enterprise cube.”

Niomi now holds a children’s movie club every Saturday morning and bespoke themed movie nights on request. She is also a mentor for two current National Ambassadors and is highly involved in her local community centre.
