Beyond the classroom
Beyond the Classroom delivers programmes that augment the formal school curriculum with life- learning opportunities, preparing young people for success in adult life. So far they have supported 1,500+ young people with the support of our various funders including Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group. Their programmes in schools and community settings allow young people to:
- Develop leadership skills, confidence and self-esteem through the performing arts and peer-mentoring.
- Expand their cultural capital through theatre trips and engagement with professional artists.
- Gain a level 2 qualification, directly facilitating their progression onto further education and employment.
- Produce impressive content for CVs and personal statements.
The programmes are youth-led, with young women discussing and exploring topics that are important to them through the performing arts. Past projects have focused on issues such as body image, social media, relationships and bullying. The young women created a piece of performance on the issues and devise a series of related workshops to be delivered to other young people in their community.
In November 2018, Beyond the Classroom started a Community Ambassador Programme at Prendergast Ladywell School in Lewisham (London) successfully engaging a team of 10 young women who have been exploring issues that they think are important to them and the young people in their community. The group have devised a piece of performance that looks at the issues young women face including; boundaries in relationships, peer pressure, myths about sex and social media. In June they will be performing the piece in their school and community. They will also be delivering workshops for younger women on these themes.
Also, they have recently been on a trip to the West End to see Motown the Musical, which had everyone dancing in the ailes. The group received compliments from other audience members on what fantastic young people they are!
‘ I look forward to Wednesdays, these sessions are the highlight of my week’
Lewisham Ambassador, Feb 2019
‘ This group is important to me because it’s shown me that I can trust people. I felt so awkward at the beginning and now I feel comfortable to share my feelings’
