Community Ambassador Programme
Petworth (West Sussex)
Funded by #iwill
Sylvia Beaufoy case study

The Sylvia Beaufoy Youth Centre is a youth club in a small and very rural community of West Sussex. It is seen as an important centre for Petworth and the surrounding area and provides a valuable support network for young people aged 8 to 20. The club is open 3 nights a week with a wide range of activities available.

As a joint project of HAYN, a structured network between Young People Services and Youth Teams from Housing Associations across the UK, the centre has launched a 12 month Community Ambassador Programme which is being funded by the #iwill Fund.

On a Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 9:00pm, this team of young ambassadors have started a Social Action Greenpower project for ages 11 to 18. This project aims to use Greenpower to help young people to explore their skills and inspire them to use these skills as part of a team. Young people will learn how these skills are transferable into their community and beyond to working life.

Greenpower is an international competition where teams design, build and develop electric cars and race them around racing circuit like Goodwood and Rockingham Motor Speedway, in Corby for the International final.

Alongside exploring their personal skills and building the cars, young people also have support from youth workers around issues such as family bereavement, anxiety and depression.
